Woke Bobo up as I kissed him goodbye and he mumbled ” where are you going now daddy”. Ok I admit this was a pointless trip for points, had to obtain one world emerald status and super elite on our national carrier Air Canada so I decided to head off to Manila for the weekend on AC and CX. Thought I would take the opportunity to report on the champagne situation in the lounges.
Naturally this being Cathay’s home base it has the biggest presence operating four lounges The Wing, its flagship lounge as well as The Bridge, The Cabin and The Pier. The champagne in business class is Piper Heidsieck champagne ( a common theme with the other lounges, must be one supplier to all the lounges )
In the First Class of the wing they have a champagne bar with 3 champagnes on offer Moet & Chandon brut and rose as well as Peninsula Champagne a private label that is a blend of 20 different crus.
The wing is also home to Cathay’s famous noodle bar and on the First side its signature restaurant Haven ( great fish and chips )
The other large One World lounge is operated by Quantas and is the home base for my favorite airline BA. Unfortunately does not offer champagne to business class there is an Aussie sparkler, but Emerald members can ask for champagne you guessed it Piper!!
The best lounge for champagne on the star alliance side is Singapore Airlines Silver Kris lounge. On the business side pouring…..Piper Heidsieck. On the first side there is Champagne Gonet-Medeville which had a distinct small grower taste.
The other large star alliance lounge is United that pours no champagne on the business side and unlike its red carpet lounges in North America you can’t buy any either!!! On the global first side they were pouring……… Piper!
If you are not Star Alliance gold and you are flying AC business you can only use Thai Airlines lounge which had NO champagne in business or first but at least the food is ok.
The Plaza Premium lounge open to priority pass and AMEX members serves no champagne.
Virgin Atlantic’s clubhouse is serving Lanson.
By far the best One World Lounge is Cathay Pacific’s Wing and best Star Alliance lounge is Singapore’s Silver Kris lounge.
About to board my AC flight home on my way back yo Bobo, next report on champagne in the new Queen’s Terminal in Heathrow.
